This year, we’re proud to showcase incredible individuals and organizations making a difference in the special needs community. Each spotlight highlights a unique story of resilience, creativity, and advocacy. Let’s celebrate these amazing contributions:
January: Patrick Faga – FirstWork
Patrick Faga, Founder and CEO of FirstWork Digital Reinforcement Learning, created an innovative app to combine learning and device time for children. His mission ensures children can enjoy their devices while engaging in meaningful learning activities.
February: Spectrum Fudge
Erin and Roger Haney of Pittsburgh started Spectrum Fudge after their son was diagnosed with autism. They provide handcrafted fudge while advocating for and employing individuals with special needs. Spectrum Fudge is a sweet symbol of inclusion.
March: Wendy Turner – “Embracing Adult SEL”
Wendy Turner, an award-winning educator and author, is passionate about Social Emotional Learning (SEL). She empowers others through her writing, professional development workshops, and contributions to educational resources, emphasizing SEL’s importance in all areas of life.
April: Cynthia Anne – “The Red-Orange Bunny”
Cynthia Anne’s children’s book, The Red-Orange Bunny, inspires creativity and self-confidence. Drawing from her 20+ years as an educator, she encourages children to embrace their individuality and explore their imaginations.
May: Amy Tindell – “Think a Little Different”
Author Amy Tindell creates heartfelt stories inspired by her neurodivergent children. Her book series, Think a Little Different, provides unique perspectives on life with autism and ADHD, fostering understanding and acceptance.
June: Jamiyl & Tracy-Ann Samuels – “The Amazingly Awesome Amani”
The Samuels’ book series, The Amazingly Awesome Amani, shares their son’s adventures navigating challenges with imagination and resilience. Their stories spread autism awareness and empower children through relatable, inspiring narratives.
July: Jesse Gregory – StimmyBox
Jesse Gregory launched StimmyBox, a subscription service for sensory development boxes tailored to young children. These boxes focus on key developmental skills, bringing joy to families as children achieve meaningful milestones.
August: Mason Spencer – HandyWash LLC
Mason Spencer founded HandyWash, a product designed to improve hand hygiene for individuals with disabilities. This innovative solution promotes independence and has become a vital resource for schools, clinics, and community organizations.
September: Krowns Culture Legacy
Krowns Culture Legacy, founded by a dedicated barber and father, creates sensory-friendly hair services for children and adults on the spectrum. They provide a safe, judgment-free environment through on-site and in-home appointments.
October: Peter Rathmann – CEO of Allis Manufacturing
Peter Rathmann, CEO of Allis Manufacturing, leads the charge in inclusive hiring inspired by his daughter on the autism spectrum. Over seven years, Peter has built a disability-friendly workplace, mentoring neurodiverse individuals like Eric, a graduate of the Uniquely Abled Project. As an Advisory Board member, Peter advocates for similar initiatives across Southeastern Wisconsin, proving that inclusive hiring benefits both productivity and community impact.
November: Jeanetta – Abilities Workshop
Jeanetta created Abilities Workshop to support families with children on the autism spectrum. Through her community of parents, teachers, and therapists, she provides expert resources and programs for children with special needs.
